About Kimber Classic Firearms

About Kimber

Kimber was founded with the singular purpose of building fine sporting firearms, better even than classics from the golden age of American gunmaking. Modern manufacturing techniques would be embraced and used to advantage, but assembly, fit and finish could only depend on practiced hands. There would be no compromise in features, materials or performance. Rimfire rifles led the way, followed by centerfire rifles, then pistols and finally revolvers. Shooters and hunters were attracted by classic lines, dependability and accuracy. In turn, demand fueled growth and encouraged continual product improvement. Today more than ever, the reputation of the Kimber brand reflects the original purpose and Kimber is known as America’s leading manufacturer of premium production firearms. Kimber quality has led to unprecedented demand. Organizations like the USA Shooting Team, LAPD™ SWAT and United States Marines assigned to Central Command chose Kimber. American shooters did too, in a big way, and Kimber has become the world’s largest producer of 1911 pistols. From Alaska to Africa, hunters have relied on Kimber rifles to take the trophy of a lifetime. At Kimber, quality will always be paramount and the true measure of success. This ensures a Kimber will continue to be the first choice of America’s best shooters.

History and Design

The .380 ACP (9×17mm) (Automatic Colt Pistol) is a rimless, straight-walled pistol cartridge developed by firearms designer John Moses Browning. The cartridge headspaces on the mouth of the case. It was introduced in 1908 by Colt, for use in its new Colt Model 1908 pocket hammerless semi-automatic, and has been a popular self-defense cartridge ever since. The .380 ACP cartridge was derived from Browning's earlier .38 ACP design, which was only marginally more powerful. The .380 ACP was designed to be truly rimless, and headspaces on the case mouth instead of the rim for better accuracy. These relatively low-powered designs were intended for blowback pistols which lacked a barrel locking mechanism, which is often required for any handgun firing a round more powerful than a .380. Using blowback operation, the design can be simplified, and lowered in cost; a locking mechanism is unnecessary, since the mass of the slide and strength of the recoil spring are enough to absorb the recoil energy of the round, due to the round's relatively low bolt thrust.
